Answers to the most common questions about vehicle shipping, pricing, timing, insurance, and what to expect at every stage of your auto transport shipment.
How auto transport pricing works, what you'll pay, and when.
Auto transport costs depend primarily on distance, vehicle size, and carrier type. A standard sedan shipping 1,000 miles on an open carrier typically costs $700–$1,000. Coast-to-coast shipping (2,500+ miles) averages $1,100–$1,600. Enclosed transport runs 40–80% higher. SUVs and trucks add $100–$300. Get an exact quote in 30 seconds with no obligation.
No. Razorback Auto Transport never collects a deposit at booking. You pay nothing until your vehicle is picked up. This protects you from a common industry problem: brokers who take deposits before securing a carrier and then leave customers waiting weeks for pickup that never materializes.
Lowball quotes are often a red flag. Some brokers post unrealistically low prices to capture the booking, then can't find a carrier willing to accept the load, leaving customers stuck. Reasonable quotes reflect actual carrier costs (fuel, hours, equipment, insurance) plus a fair margin. If a quote is dramatically below market rate, ask why — and verify the broker is properly licensed before paying anything.
Razorback accepts all major credit cards for online booking confirmation (no charge until pickup). At pickup or delivery, carriers typically accept cash, certified check, or cashier's check. Some carriers accept credit cards at delivery with a small processing fee. Your specialist confirms payment method details at booking.
Razorback quotes are all-inclusive and binding — no fuel surcharges, no hidden fees, no surprise add-ons. The only situations where pricing can change are if you change the shipment details after booking (different pickup/delivery location, different vehicle, change in operability) or if extreme conditions like government-declared emergencies disrupt carrier operations. Otherwise, what you're quoted is what you pay.
Yes. Razorback offers verified discounts for active military and veterans (10%), college students (5%), and snowbirds booking round-trip seasonal moves (5–10%). Multi-vehicle shipments and repeat customers also receive volume discounts. Discounts are applied at booking after verification.
Pickup windows, transit times, and what to expect day-to-day.
Standard transit time depends on distance: 1–3 days under 500 miles, 3–5 days for 1,000 miles, 7–9 days coast-to-coast. Pickup window (from booking to actual pickup) typically adds 1–4 days. Total time from booking to delivery is generally 1–2 weeks for cross-country routes. See our Transit Time Guide for detailed estimates by route.
Same-day or next-day pickup is possible with our Expedited Car Shipping service, which prioritizes your shipment for faster dispatch. Standard service typically pickup within 1–7 days. If you have a tight timeline, mention this at booking and we'll let you know what's realistic for your specific route.
Date changes are usually accommodated as long as you provide reasonable notice. The carrier needs to coordinate with other pickups and deliveries on the route, so changes within 24 hours of pickup may be difficult. Contact your logistics specialist as soon as you know about a needed change — flexibility is highest 3+ days before the scheduled date.
Standard auto transport provides pickup windows (typically 1–4 days) and delivery estimates rather than guaranteed dates, because transit times depend on weather, traffic, and route stops. For situations where exact dates matter — military PCS deadlines, job start dates, sale closings — our Guaranteed Pickup Service contractually locks in a specific date with financial backing.
Carriers communicate proactively about any timing changes. If a shipment runs significantly late (more than 1–2 days past estimate), your Razorback specialist coordinates directly with the carrier to resolve the issue. Genuine delays from weather, traffic, or mechanical issues are normal occasionally; carriers that miss their estimates without communication are red flags that affect their standing in our network.
What we ship, how to prepare, and special vehicle considerations.
Yes. Inoperable vehicle shipping is a standard service. Non-running cars must be able to roll, steer, and brake to hold position on the trailer (no driving required — they're winched on). Inoperable vehicles typically cost $100–$200 more than standard shipping due to the additional time and equipment required at loading.
Federal regulations restrict personal property in shipped vehicles, but most carriers permit up to 100 lbs in the trunk at the customer's own risk. Items must be packed below window level. Personal items are not covered by cargo insurance. For longer cross-country moves where you need to move personal items, mention this when booking — we can advise on what's allowed by your specific carrier.
Yes. Lifted trucks, lowered cars, modified SUVs, and custom vehicles all ship via Razorback. Provide accurate overall dimensions (especially height) at booking so we dispatch a carrier with appropriate deck clearance. Some extreme modifications may require specific carrier types or premium pricing, but the vast majority of modified vehicles ship without issue.
Yes — and it's often more economical per vehicle than separate shipments. Multi-vehicle pricing applies for 2+ vehicles shipping to the same destination. Common scenarios include families with two cars relocating together, snowbird couples shipping both spouses' vehicles, and dealers moving multiple cars to one buyer.
Cargo insurance covers damage caused during the transport process. If you notice new damage at delivery, document it on the Bill of Lading before signing — this is critical for any insurance claim. Cargo insurance limits are $100,000 on open carriers and $250,000–$1,000,000 on enclosed carriers. Razorback advocates for customers throughout any claim process.
Razorback ships virtually every type of road vehicle: sedans, coupes, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, minivans, motorcycles, classic cars, exotic and luxury vehicles, electric vehicles, RVs, boats on trailers, ATVs and UTVs, golf carts, and LSVs. Specialized vehicles like construction equipment require commercial heavy haul services rather than standard auto transport.
Cargo coverage, the Bill of Lading, and what happens if something goes wrong.
Yes. Every carrier in the Razorback network holds active cargo insurance covering your vehicle during transit. Open transport carriers typically carry $100,000 in cargo coverage. Enclosed transport carriers carry $250,000 to $1,000,000+. Coverage is included in your shipment — you don't pay extra for it.
Generally yes, your existing auto insurance continues to cover the vehicle during transit, though specifics depend on your policy. The carrier's cargo insurance is the primary coverage for transport damage. For high-value vehicles, contact your insurance company to confirm coverage details and consider supplemental policies if needed.
Cargo insurance covers damage caused during the transport process — loading, transit, and unloading. It does not cover: items inside the vehicle (personal property), pre-existing damage (documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup), mechanical or electrical issues unrelated to transport, or "acts of God" like hurricanes or wildfires affecting routes.
If you notice new damage at delivery, document it on the Bill of Lading before signing — this is the critical step. Take photos of any damage at delivery. Contact your Razorback specialist within 24 hours of delivery to start the claim process. We coordinate with the carrier's insurance to resolve claims, and we advocate for customers throughout the process.
Carriers are responsible for vehicles in their possession from pickup through delivery. Cargo insurance covers damage; carrier liability covers total loss in the rare event a vehicle goes missing. We work only with carriers carrying current insurance documentation and clean safety records. Total losses are extremely rare in the auto transport industry.

For standard service, 1–2 weeks ahead is plenty. For peak season (snowbird routes in fall/spring, college moves in August/December/May), book 3–4 weeks ahead for best pricing and pickup window flexibility. Last-minute bookings (1–3 days out) are often possible but may face premium pricing.
You can get a quote and reserve a booking without paying anything upfront. Some carriers ask for credit card information at booking purely to confirm identity, but no charge is made until pickup. Final payment to the carrier happens at delivery.
Yes. Cancellations are free up until the carrier is dispatched (typically 24–48 hours before pickup). After dispatch, a small dispatch fee may apply. Changes to pickup or delivery details are accommodated as long as you provide reasonable notice. Contact your specialist as soon as you know about any change.
Absolutely. The booking contact, pickup contact, and delivery contact can all be different people. Many shipments involve parents booking for college students, family members coordinating moves on behalf of deployed military members, or estate transfers. Just provide accurate contact information for the person at each end of the move.
Razorback ships within the 48 contiguous U.S. states and can coordinate shipping to/from Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico through partner carriers using a combination of land and maritime/air transport. Pricing and timing vary significantly for non-contiguous destinations. Call for a specific quote.
